New Postal Rate Increases Effective May 14, 2007

Will This Effect Your Budget For Mailing?

On March 19, 2007 the Postal Service Governors approved an increase in the price of First Class stamps to .41 cents, authorized the issuance of the Forever Stamp, approved shape-based pricing and set a May 14th, 2007 implementation date for these changes.

Forever stamp
The Forever stamp which will sell at the new 41-cent First-Class Mail one ounce letter rate will always be the one-ounce letter rate and can be used for any future one-ounce letter mailing without extra postage.

Shape-based pricing
The new prices also reflect differences in the cost of handling letters, large envelopes (flats), packages (parcels). The shape of the mail piece will play a larger role in the pricing of First-Class Mail. Today, letters, flats (large envelopes) and parcels over 1-ounce have the same price at every weight increment. The new rate is designed to recognize each of these shapes with substantially different processing cost and will have separate prices. Letters measuring larger then 6”x 11.5”or thicker then .25 inches will be processed as flats. Letters weighing over 3.5 ounces will be subject to the rates for flats. Flats measuring thicker then .75 inches will be processed as parcels.

The new Shaped-base pricing structure will have a significant impact on your mail budget for the coming year. For additional information visit the link below to view all of the new postal service rates increases.
